Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
