Defense Department Report Finds Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing secret information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Event

The chat group in dispute included details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for transmitting sensitive material.

Potential Risk to Troops

The internal investigation found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the mission. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released later this week.
