Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens encouraged to avoid going out as strong winds strike the region.

Intense gusts attaining velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 homes without power and led authorities to call off in excess of 100 aircraft departures, as reported by regional news sources.

The winds are affecting the whole southern region and southern parts of the North Island, per the country's meteorological service.

The nation's agencies have released infrequent high-level wind alerts - the most severe warning - in central regions encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been urged to remain inside, avoid travel, and get ready for further utility disruptions.

Broad Destruction and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss seems to be impacting homes predominantly in the southern region, while officials state that power was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have reported that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, whereas power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gales.

Across Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being hit by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was pushed toward moving cars on a road by a powerful blast, in a moment that was recorded in a widely shared car camera footage.

Flights to and from the urban area have been cancelled as a result of the weather, and various routes and public facilities are not operating.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have issued a state of emergency, to support recovery activities.

Yet the extreme weather has forced them to modify certain arrangements, with various open-air gatherings shifted to interior venues or abandoned.

Similar gusts are impacting Australia, causing a heatwave to the nation's interior regions.
