Our Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Place.

On the surface, Lux could seem more like a challenging scholarly challenge rather than the latest pop record by an artist whose previous single featured a global K-pop icon. Broken into 4 separate parts and performed in thirteen tongues, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album exploring female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, often by way of the perspective of different women saints. The end of a love affair—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—soars heavenward here, carried by the lush sound of a major orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure daring by itself renders the work of contemporary pop stars appear quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That Lux manages to escape dry intellectual posturing feels almost miraculous, and sole praise going to the artist. Although it's not the first time project to blend historical sounds and modern styles, its ambitions feel much greater here, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. What really raises her fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, dense compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its tornado. Even when she's tearing hearts in two, you nevertheless desire to be alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That exuberant spirit shines clearly on the stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, and we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment prior to a comically exaggerated string surge thuds down with cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts into the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic of Lux is that the listener rarely exactly understand—or even want to predict—what you is going next."

Almost each track ends at a completely distinct place than how it started. A track examines the transient nature of celebrity with a delicate orchestration only to collapsing into digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing her earlier rhythmic work begins out moody and sinister, featuring prowling beats, until fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its rough corners.

The Bridge Between Art & Accessibility

A key achievement of Lux is straddling the gap of radical experimentation and broad appeal. This is no coincidence that it has become her highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals upward. This feat gets repeated on another powerful ballad that expands and contracts, weaving layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, eviscerating a former lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism for glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its own inherent excess. It is a deep source of buried gems that takes time to completely explore but never seem like a chore. While some big releases of the year seemed like feasting on meal, Lux offers a lavish feast at which the characters at the table, some tipsy on holy wine, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
