Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
