The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Backup Options
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
