Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
